Going Beyond Basic Configuration with Resco Mobile

Resco is a Microsoft partner that offers a mobile app that works with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement. The mobile app is used as the Field Service Mobile app delivered with Dynamics 365 for Field Service and can also be used as an add-on mobile app for other D365 business applications like D365 for Sales. Configuration of the Resco app is achieved through a tool called Woodford. The Woodford tool offers many configuration features that are the equivalent of configuration functionality through D365 such as business rules and workflows. The great part about Woodford is that it also offers configuration features that go above and beyond the basic configuration features of D365. In this article, I will discuss these additional configuration capabilities.

Configuration of Views

Many of the concepts of configuring views in Woodford mirrors that of D365. You can add fields to appear in the view and set the filter and sort criteria to control the records that appear. Building a view in Woodford also allows you to:

  • Present records with multiple vertical rows of data per record versus each data point presented in a separate column.
  • Present data from records beyond the parent/child relationship. For example, configuring a view for Work Orders would allow you to present the Work Order’s Owner’s manager as a data point.
  • Present a button on each record to allow the user to change the status of the record without opening the record form.

Row Scripts

Woodford offers advanced functionality for configuring views called row scripts which allow you to change the style of the row based on criteria. Styling options include font color, background color, font weight, font size, and more. This configuration allows you to achieve features such as highlighting rows based on status of a work order, making the text of a row bold for attention to overdue activities, or setting font color based on the amount of revenue on an opportunity.

Multiple Forms

Just like D365, Woodford allows you to configure multiple forms for a single entity. While D365 chooses the form to display to the end user based on their security role, Woodford offers Select Form Rules which enables the functionality to present the form based on data within the record. For example, if you deploy multiple forms on the account entity based on whether the account is a customer, vendor, or supplier, you can use a Select Form Rule to present a specific form based on the value of the relationship type field on the account.

Form Rules

D365 offers business rules as a configuration option to achieve on record automation, but business rules are limited to the fields on the form. Woodford’s Form Rules provide functionality closer to OnLoad and OnChange form javascript without the development effort. With Form Rules, you can:

  • Reference data from associated records. This includes directly associated records as well as indirectly related records.
  • Hide or show tabs within the form.
  • Further filter the view of a lookup for a specific form.
  • Set styling to alter the font color, background color, font size and more of the fields in the form.

In this article, I have covered a few of the basic configuration options within Woodford that provide functionality above and beyond basic configuration in D365. Woodford also allows customization which often requires development effort through things like offline HTML, javascript, and iframes, so the customization capabilities of Woodford allow you to take your app even further.
