How Would your Fresh Food Business Perform in a Product Recall?

There's a major shift happening in the fresh food industry for compliance and recall management. Could your business handle a product recall?

It’s still fresh in our minds when, in 2015, Blue Bell Creamery was forced to recall all its products and lose millions of dollars in sales, threatening to end the business and its 100-year history. The first recall was issued on an assortment of items produced at its creameries, due to the discovery of five cases of listeriosis in Kansas believed to be caused by products produced at its creamery in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Three of the five patients with listeria died. Even today, Blue Bell Creameries’ directors are facing claims that their mismanagement led to the 2015 listeria outbreak.

This is one of those worst-case scenarios when it comes to recalls, and I hate to be a “Debbie-downer,” but the fact is that no fresh food manufacturer or distributor is immune.

We know what keeps fresh food distributors up at night

Tracking and tracing products back through the supply chain and managing the risk and cost of recalls, complying with the Food Safety Modernization Act, managing perishable items through the fresh food supply chain with insufficient visibility to where products are going, where they came from, and when they expire.

There’s a major shift happening today in the automation of growing, packing, and shipping in the food supply industry for compliance and recall management. Automated supply chain traceability and business analytics that show a detailed description of where produce has been shipped and where it came from has become critically important as it could make or break businesses like yours.
