A new feature in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 is the introduction of the Product Number. Microsoft added this new classification so corporations can have more accurate consolidated reporting and product tracking throughout their entire organization, including intercompany sites and for those with multiple legal entities. The ability to track a Product Number amongst each location within an organization will make it easier to maintain company-wide data that can be used to track products, monitor trends between intercompany sales and purchase orders, as well as other reporting requirements.
In Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, a product is first released to a legal entity, then can be included on a transaction or orders can be created against that product. The Item Number used in previous versions of Microsoft Dynamics AX is still available. The Item Number can be used by the individual legal entities to track the product separately. Some manufacturers will include a unit of measure in their entity-specific item number. This practice can be maintained by using the Item Number.
The introduction of the Product Number in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 will make it easier to track intercompany demand and supply for the purposes of master scheduling, forecasting, inventory control, or other important reporting needs.
